Vision
Phase 1: Purchase & Closing - Complete
Chabad of Downtown and YJP has purchased a centrally located property, close to 6,000 sqft of indoor space including a main building, secondary house, and courtyard to renovate and serve as the new center for the YJP and Downtown communities.
Phase 2: Renovations & Occupancy - Complete
We made changes and improvements to the property to make it suitable for our program needs. The renovations allow for a dedicated synagogue/event space, lounge area for study and socializing, educational programs, Shabbat & Holiday services and meals, and library. This also includes our redoing the Newman Courtyard, painting the entire exterior and significant investments into the infrastructure of the building. The office wing was also updated and modernized.
See below for renovation update
Phase 3: Securing the Future
Pay down the note on the property to give the Chai House strong financial stability to withstand any future fluctuations in the economy.
Phase 4: Visions for the Future
Planning for a full buildout of a modern commercial updated Jewish center. This will be followed by permiting and construction.
Updates and Report
We are happy to annouce that the Chai House is fully active and open for the community.
After purchasing in early April 2025 we put in over $170,000 in renovations cleaning, repairing, painting and upgrading both buildings and the courtyard. This marks the completion of Phase One and Two of the Chai House Campaign.
YJP is now hosting events at the Chai House 3-5 times weekly; we are renting the small house and offices to generate revenue; there is a kosher venue rental option; and we are hosting cross-community events with partner organizations.
We have an active wish-list of renovation projects, both large and small, as well as interior and exterior furnishings, and we are steadily implementing these improvements as funding becomes available. At the same time, we are prioritizing paying down the remaining debt on the property.
